Chris Ashe

Where are you based?: Abingdon

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: Working towards the worldwide goal of near unlimited clean energy, also being surrounded by likeminded people.

What do you like to do in your spare time? : If I’m feeling lazy, gaming and reading. If I’m feeling active, hiking or orienteering. I also like to dabble in 3D printing.

What is your favourite place you've been and why? : 51.65932138335906, -1.2261354508962465, you know why…..

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? :  Telekinesis, why bother flying across the world when you can make it fly around you.

Who inspires you? : My family, and maybe my cats.

What is the #1 item on your bucket list? : It would be cool to spend some time staring out of the cupola on the ISS.

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: Learning and meeting new people

What do you like to do in your spare time? Play piano and run

What is your favourite place you've been and why? Kakadu national park (the northern territory, Australia) due to the amazing wildlife and landscape

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? Superintelligence, to sort stuff out

Who inspires you? I’ll be honest I’m not sure

What is the #1 item on your bucket list? See a tornado







 

Luke Fisher
 

Name:  Luke Fisher
University & Course: 
University of Cambridge, Materials Science

Department you're working in:  H3AT

Where are you based?  Abingdon

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme:  Experimental work!  Spending the last 18 months at university with no lab access or practical teaching wasn’t exactly ideal, so I’m looking forward to making up for that here. 

What do you like to do in your spare time?  Run, cycle, walk, camp: anything outdoorsy really.  I’m a keen runner and race a fair bit, particularly cross country, orienteering and some fell racing whenever I can get up north!

What is your favourite place you've been and why?  The west coast of Scotland.  You have to take your chances with the weather, but a dry day on the big hills is unbeatable.

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it?  To be able to “see” the solution to a technical problem.  Yes, clearly that would mean there were no more problems left to solve, but it would make work a hell of a lot easier!

Where are you based? Oxford

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: After a year of remote studying at Uni, actually being allowed to be somewhere in person!

What do you like to do in your spare time? I race kayaks and love to play guitar

What is your favourite place you've been and why? I sailed around the Ionian sea with my family a few years ago, beautiful place with great food!

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? Shapeshifting, it would be a cool party trick plus you’d never have to get a haircut again

Who inspires you? I once went to a talk from a para athlete named Nick Beighton. After losing both his legs to an IED in Afghanistan he went on to compete and eventually medal at the Paralympics, pretty inspiring stuff

What is the #1 item on your bucket list? I’d love to go skydiving someday

 

 

 

 

 

Sean Hayes

Where are you based? Oxford

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: Getting involved in as many different areas of fusion technology I can. It’s been a huge goal of mine to get here, so I’m excited to be surrounded by so many fusion nerds

What do you like to do in your spare time? Like everyone else in STEM, I love climbing, specifically bouldering (too lazy for ropes). Kind of a movies/series enthusiast, and always try to have a book on the go. Gaming is a go to of course   

What is your favourite place you've been and why? Probably CERN, Geneva. It’s a pretty awe-inspiring place to be with interesting people to talk to everywhere, and it’s also what first inspired my interest in nuclear physics. Also getting soaked by the Geneva water fountain was a lot more fun than it should be

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? The power to convert nuclear waste into (slightly irradiated, energy conservation cmon) Italian food.

What is the #1 item on your bucket list? Go to Fountainebleau, it’s the ultimate bouldering pilgrimage.

Where are you based? London

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: All the learning opportunities whilst working on a really exciting project

What do you like to do in your spare time? Well, I’ve just had a baby, so mostly looking after him. But when I did have spare time I liked to play hockey and sing.

What is your favourite place you've been and why? Costa Rica because of the amazing diversity of nature

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? I’m sure this is a very common answer but I think I would fly

What is the #1 item on your bucket list? Own a big piece of land and rewild it. Or learn to paraglide…

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: Applying all the concepts I learnt at university in real world applications.

What do you like to do in your spare time? Walking, reading, cycling and of course going to the pub.

What is your favourite place you've been and why? Difficult to say probably somewhere when I’ve been lost in the countryside, no better feeling than not having a clue where you are! Either that or F11.

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? 100% to not have hangovers!

Who inspires you? Tom ‘Procurement’ Smith

What is the #1 item on your bucket list? Visit 52 North Gin Bar ( I’ve heard its very good)

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: Working with other grads, and also immersing myself in project work and contributing towards solving a crucial world problem.

What do you like to do in your spare time? Anything sport related, particularly football. Also always open to new Netflix recommendations. Also love to travel but obviously not something I’ve done much of lately!

What is your favourite place you've been and why? Split, Croatia. Amazing islands and beaches to visit.

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? Teleportation just to increase my spare time!

Who inspires you? Definitely my friends and family.

What do you like to do in your spare time? Cycling (road, track, mtb) and hiking

What is your favourite place you've been and why? The Lochinver Larder – they have a fantastic selection of pies

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? The ability to fly – save time and money on the commute to work and a great workout too!

What is the #1 item on your bucket list? Bike packing in the Atlas Mountains, Morocco.

Kandersteg, Switzerland for its hiking trails and gorgeous views

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? Teleportation would make the commute from Cardiff a lot easier..

Dylan Jacob Reeve
 

Name: Dylan Jacob Reeve
University & Course: Plymouth University, MEng Mechanical Engineering. 

Department you're working in: Central Engineering, working on the very exiting STEP project.

Where are you based? Didcot/Abingdon (I’m slap bang between the two). 

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: Eventually working with Steve Allen’s Re-mountable magnet stuff (In simple terms I told my friends back home that I want to be the magnet man)! And the Grad-Olympics of course! (I’m very competitive!).

What do you like to do in your spare time? Jump off cliffs into water!! (and many other adrenaline filled activities) Safely of course… I have successfully survived after backflipping a nearly 20 meter cliff in Torquay!

What is your favourite place you've been and why? Too many lovely places and memories to list them all… But the time in Florida with just me and my mum was probably up there as one of the best. The roller coasters were crazy and the fact my mum hated the thrill made me love it. Always loved conquering fears!

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? Definitely flying, I would just fly around with the birds over as many beautiful places that I can. Oregon is the place I want to end up because of the insane waterfalls… Again its for the cliff jumping! 

Who inspires you? Again, too many to list! Here is 3 very different inspirations: My Mum for her love of being different and not being another sheep in the heard, Elon Musk for his dedication of his finances to better humanity through science, and Steve Allen as he is the Motorbike riding magnet man hahaha (I’ll get there eventually)!

What is the #1 item on your bucket list? Triumph Daytona 675R in white (the colour scheme closely matches my car…), as soon as I am 24 and the government will let me ride it, It’s mine!!!

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: Learning and practicing advanced programming skills, meeting people and making connections, messing about with machines
What do you like to do in your spare time? Play snooker, watch videos about tech, learn to develop games
What is your favourite place you've been and why? The River Thames in Central London. Great to walk down and see all the amazing sites
If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? Telekinesis. So I can perform tasks without moving a muscle (cos I'm lazy)
Who inspires you? Not a single individual but people who are able to maintain calmness and rational thought in difficult situations are amazing people
What is the #1 item on your bucket list? A decent classic sporty car. Probably something like a late 70s Golf or an early 80s Quattro.


 

Jan Sprengel

University & Course: University of Bath – Mechanical Engineering with Year Long Placement

Department you're working in:
Central Engineering Department – Confinement & Plasma Shaping Section

Where are you based? Oxford

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: Learning from smarter and more experienced people  and working on a variety of interesting and challenging projects

What do you like to do in your spare time? DMing DnD, playing boardgames and tennis, going to gym and drinking on the weekends :D

What is your favourite place you've been and why? Olive groves on the hills surrounding the city of Vinci, Tuscany – I have never seen more tranquil and mesmerizing place

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? Being rich – Batman and Ironman are the best superheroes, change my mind

Who inspires you? You could take a sophisticated guess from the picture… but also my parents!

What is the #1 item on your bucket list? Learn to speak German (or French, I’ll be satisfied with either)
