Chris Ashe

Where are you based?: Abingdon

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: Working towards the worldwide goal of near unlimited clean energy, also being surrounded by likeminded people.

What do you like to do in your spare time? : If I’m feeling lazy, gaming and reading. If I’m feeling active, hiking or orienteering. I also like to dabble in 3D printing.

What is your favourite place you've been and why? : 51.65932138335906, -1.2261354508962465, you know why…..

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? :  Telekinesis, why bother flying across the world when you can make it fly around you.

Who inspires you? : My family, and maybe my cats.

What is the #1 item on your bucket list? : It would be cool to spend some time staring out of the cupola on the ISS.

What do you like to do in your spare time? Play piano and run

What is your favourite place you've been and why? Kakadu national park (the northern territory, Australia) due to the amazing wildlife and landscape

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? Superintelligence, to sort stuff out

Who inspires you? I’ll be honest I’m not sure

Luke Fisher

Where are you based?  Abingdon

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme:  Experimental work!  Spending the last 18 months at university with no lab access or practical teaching wasn’t exactly ideal, so I’m looking forward to making up for that here. 

What do you like to do in your spare time?  Run, cycle, walk, camp: anything outdoorsy really.  I’m a keen runner and race a fair bit, particularly cross country, orienteering and some fell racing whenever I can get up north!

What is your favourite place you've been and why?  The west coast of Scotland.  You have to take your chances with the weather, but a dry day on the big hills is unbeatable.

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it?  To be able to “see” the solution to a technical problem.  Yes, clearly that would mean there were no more problems left to solve, but it would make work a hell of a lot easier!

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: After a year of remote studying at Uni, actually being allowed to be somewhere in person!

What do you like to do in your spare time? I race kayaks and love to play guitar

What is your favourite place you've been and why? I sailed around the Ionian sea with my family a few years ago, beautiful place with great food!

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? Shapeshifting, it would be a cool party trick plus you’d never have to get a haircut again

Who inspires you? I once went to a talk from a para athlete named Nick Beighton. After losing both his legs to an IED in Afghanistan he went on to compete and eventually medal at the Paralympics, pretty inspiring stuff

What is the #1 item on your bucket list? I’d love to go skydiving someday

Where are you based? Oxford

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: Getting involved in as many different areas of fusion technology I can. It’s been a huge goal of mine to get here, so I’m excited to be surrounded by so many fusion nerds

What do you like to do in your spare time? Like everyone else in STEM, I love climbing, specifically bouldering (too lazy for ropes). Kind of a movies/series enthusiast, and always try to have a book on the go. Gaming is a go to of course   

What is your favourite place you've been and why? Probably CERN, Geneva. It’s a pretty awe-inspiring place to be with interesting people to talk to everywhere, and it’s also what first inspired my interest in nuclear physics. Also getting soaked by the Geneva water fountain was a lot more fun than it should be

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? The power to convert nuclear waste into (slightly irradiated, energy conservation cmon) Italian food.

What is the #1 item on your bucket list? Go to Fountainebleau, it’s the ultimate bouldering pilgrimage.

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: All the learning opportunities whilst working on a really exciting project

What do you like to do in your spare time? Well, I’ve just had a baby, so mostly looking after him. But when I did have spare time I liked to play hockey and sing.

What is your favourite place you've been and why? Costa Rica because of the amazing diversity of nature

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? I’m sure this is a very common answer but I think I would fly

What is the #1 item on your bucket list? Own a big piece of land and rewild it. Or learn to paraglide…

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: Applying all the concepts I learnt at university in real world applications.

What do you like to do in your spare time? Walking, reading, cycling and of course going to the pub.

What is your favourite place you've been and why? Difficult to say probably somewhere when I’ve been lost in the countryside, no better feeling than not having a clue where you are! Either that or F11.

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? 100% to not have hangovers!

What do you like to do in your spare time? Anything sport related, particularly football. Also always open to new Netflix recommendations. Also love to travel but obviously not something I’ve done much of lately!

What is your favourite place you've been and why? Split, Croatia. Amazing islands and beaches to visit.

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? Teleportation just to increase my spare time!

Who inspires you? Definitely my friends and family.

What is your favourite place you've been and why? The Lochinver Larder – they have a fantastic selection of pies

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? The ability to fly – save time and money on the commute to work and a great workout too!

Dylan Jacob Reeve
 

Name: Dylan Jacob Reeve
University & Course: Plymouth University, MEng Mechanical Engineering. 

Department you're working in: Central Engineering, working on the very exiting STEP project.

Where are you based? Didcot/Abingdon (I’m slap bang between the two). 

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: Eventually working with Steve Allen’s Re-mountable magnet stuff (In simple terms I told my friends back home that I want to be the magnet man)! And the Grad-Olympics of course! (I’m very competitive!).

What do you like to do in your spare time? Jump off cliffs into water!! (and many other adrenaline filled activities) Safely of course… I have successfully survived after backflipping a nearly 20 meter cliff in Torquay!

What is your favourite place you've been and why? Too many lovely places and memories to list them all… But the time in Florida with just me and my mum was probably up there as one of the best. The roller coasters were crazy and the fact my mum hated the thrill made me love it. Always loved conquering fears!

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? Definitely flying, I would just fly around with the birds over as many beautiful places that I can. Oregon is the place I want to end up because of the insane waterfalls… Again its for the cliff jumping! 

Who inspires you? Again, too many to list! Here is 3 very different inspirations: My Mum for her love of being different and not being another sheep in the heard, Elon Musk for his dedication of his finances to better humanity through science, and Steve Allen as he is the Motorbike riding magnet man hahaha (I’ll get there eventually)!

What is the #1 item on your bucket list? Triumph Daytona 675R in white (the colour scheme closely matches my car…), as soon as I am 24 and the government will let me ride it, It’s mine!!!

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: Learning and practicing advanced programming skills, meeting people and making connections, messing about with machines
What do you like to do in your spare time? Play snooker, watch videos about tech, learn to develop games
What is your favourite place you've been and why? The River Thames in Central London. Great to walk down and see all the amazing sites
If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? Telekinesis. So I can perform tasks without moving a muscle (cos I'm lazy)
Who inspires you? Not a single individual but people who are able to maintain calmness and rational thought in difficult situations are amazing people
What is the #1 item on your bucket list? A decent classic sporty car. Probably something like a late 70s Golf or an early 80s Quattro.

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: Learning from smarter and more experienced people  and working on a variety of interesting and challenging projects

What do you like to do in your spare time? DMing DnD, playing boardgames and tennis, going to gym and drinking on the weekends :D

What is your favourite place you've been and why? Olive groves on the hills surrounding the city of Vinci, Tuscany – I have never seen more tranquil and mesmerizing place

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? Being rich – Batman and Ironman are the best superheroes, change my mind

Who inspires you? You could take a sophisticated guess from the picture… but also my parents!

What is the #1 item on your bucket list? Learn to speak German (or French, I’ll be satisfied with either)

Meet the 2021 Graduates (Part 1)

This year, UKAEA once again welcomes the largest graduate intake to date, meaning the graduate scheme is now larger than ever with nearly 100 members across both years. With Covid restrictions lifting, this year promises to be an exciting one for the graduate scheme as we restart the usual actives that were missed in 2020, and this time with a much larger group working in various departments all over the company.

We've once again reached out with a little survey to get to know the new grads, so please enjoy these introductory profiles and look forward to part 2 next week!

Where are you based? Didcot

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: Contributing towards fusion research and getting to know the other grads.

What do you like to do in your spare time? Rock Climbing, playing the piano and going out for a few cocktails!

What is your favourite place you've been and why? Finland because who wouldn’t love husky rides and snowmobiling in a winter wonderland

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? Time travel so I can see if fusion really is 30 years away

Jordan d'Arras

Name: Jordan d’Arras

Department you're working in: Manufacturing Technology and Equipment Qualification (MTEQ), in the Fusion Technology Department

Where are you based? Sheffield/Rotherham

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: I’m looking forward to working in an organisation that’s striving for limitless clean energy. It’s nice to know that I’m doing good for the planet, and all the cutting edge tech and science is just really cool to be around on a daily basis.

What do you like to do in your spare time? If I’m being active, I enjoy Rock Climbing (leading>bouldering), football (Sheffield United) and hiking! And if I’m being lazy, I enjoy Sci-Fi movies and books, and watching UK comedies.

What is your favourite place you've been and why? Rio De Janeiro during Carnival! The vibes were immaculate! 

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? Billions of pounds and a crippling fear of bats?

Who inspires you? My mates. They’re a fun, smart and diverse bunch and they make me a better person for it!

What is the #1 item on your bucket list? Possibly getting ‘off planet’ and seeing earth from above when Bezos, Musk, Branson and Co. get the cost down! But more realistically would be to see the northern lights.

Department you're working in: RACE

Where are you based? Didcot (statistically the “most normal town in England” according to Google)

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: Designing some neat robot parts, and perhaps getting superpowers from licking JET

What do you like to do in your spare time? A mix of cooking, listening to music, reading, and falling through Google rabbit holes.

What is your favourite place you've been and why? The beaches of Fiji on Christmas Day – I much preferred the warm sands to a cold, wet train platform

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? Telekinesis – It would certainly make Remote Handling a lot easier.

Who inspires you? Some really cool friends of mine who are quietly awesome

What is the #1 item on your bucket list? See the Aurora Borealis (one that’s not localised entirely within my kitchen)

What is your favourite place you've been and why? Thailand because of the amazing snorkelling and street food

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? Teleportation – Go on all the holidays

Who inspires you? Richard Browning – made a functional jet pack

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: Learning lots, developing new skills, and working on a really exciting project

What do you like to do in your spare time? Archery, Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA/swordfighting), tabletop gaming

What is your favourite place you've been and why? Northumberland… the countryside is great, and there are lots of castles to visit!

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? The power to summon any food at any time… I like cooking, but sometimes it’s just too much effort when I’m hungry!

Who inspires you? Emperor Palpatine… if it was that easy to create electricity, our jobs would be a lot easier

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: Meeting loads of new people at UKAEA and feeling like I can actually do my job.
What do you like to do in your spare time? I love playing and listening to music, football, and competitive games.
What is your favourite place you've been and why? Rome, because of the food, and the Ardeche, because I went white water rafting there and it was soo good. They both remind me so much of Wantage.
If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? I wish I could fly, I could travel everywhere and fly over traffic, though I imagine I would need lots of sun cream.

What is the #1 item on your bucket list? Learn another language.

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: Using cool tech and meeting interesting people.

What do you like to do in your spare time? Playing instruments, climbing, gaming, films.

What is your favourite place you've been and why? Jasper in Canada – Really beautiful and lots of wildlife.

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? Teleport so I could see family and friends whenever I want. I could also wake up later!

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: Working with committed people who are experts in their fields to design solutions to complex problems and take my engineering skills to the next level.

What do you like to do in your spare time? Football mainly, have been involved in backstage theatre work and hoping to do more sport in Oxford.

What is your favourite place you've been and why? Iceland – beautiful country, exciting geography and so different to anywhere else in the world.

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? Flying – not really got a plan for what to do with it, just seems fun and convenient!

Who inspires you? People around me creating cool things.

What is the #1 item on your bucket list? Jet skiing

What do you like to do in your spare time? Film photography, hiking and cooking!
What is your favourite place you've been and why? Norway, because of how vast and beautiful it is (but stupidly expensive still)
If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? Definitely time travel just so I can win the lottery.

Jamie Hughes

Name: Jamie Hughes

University & Course: Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Southampton 

Department you're working in: RACE – ITER

Where are you based? Didcot 

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: Getting the opportunity to work in multiple different departments, getting experience in all the areas of robotics and networking with everyone here.

What do you like to do in your spare time? I like to work on my own IoT/Robotic projects. Robots, 3d printing stuff, circuit/electronics, anything that interests me I’ll try and build it (if I can afford to T-T). 

What is your favourite place you've been and why? I used to live in Canada and while I was there enjoyed exploring the country, especially the Rocky Mountains. They had a lot of hiking trails ending in natural springs or glaciers.

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? Either the ability to teleport or control time, that way I would never be late, and travel would be a breeze. 

Who inspires you? My family who has supported me, and an ambiguous amount of spite to those who said I couldn’t make it.

What is the #1 item on your bucket list? I really want to have a go a driving/playing with the Spot robot from Boston dynamics.

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: Meeting new interesting people and have great conversations

What do you like to do in your spare time? Hiking and reading books

What is your favourite place you've been and why? The Greek island of Syros. It’s just breath-taking

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? Reading people’s minds. It helps a lot when negotiating contracts.

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: improve my understanding of electrical systems and learn a whole lot about robotics, also gradlympics and other grad events!
What do you like to do in your spare time? Binge watch shows and anime, play games/ sports, go out with friends and eat food 😋
What is your favourite place you've been and why? India, because lovely weather, amazing food and loads of places to explore.
If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? Teleportation, go on holiday wherever I want, save a whole load of travel expenses and time 👀
Who inspires you? My grandfathers, they were truly amazing people.

What is your favourite place you've been and why? Dominican Republic - Beautiful island where I have lots of fond memories
If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? To be able to fly so that I could travel around the world

What do you like to do in your spare time? Gaming, reading sci-fi novels and coming up with ever stranger ideas related to space and fusion.

What is your favourite place you've been and why? Aside from Culham (because of course)? Probably the school trip to CERN in Geneva because it was my first time seeing high energy research up close.

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? Faster-than-light travel, I’d explore the universe and maybe meet some intelligent aliens.

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme:
Meeting people, learning, making friends and making things work!

What do you like to do in your spare time?
Reading books, hiking, playing games and playing harmonica (badly)
What is your favourite place you've been and why? Hel, Poland. Very quaint seaside town on a peninsula with lovely beaches and coniferous forests. Weirdly, someone decided to name it “Hel(l)”.
If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it?
Unoriginal, but teleportation. I could travel a lot and the morning commute (or rather the lack of it) would be ten times better.

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: Meeting new people and learning from everyone’s expertise in the field of nuclear fusion.

What do you like to do in your spare time? In the winter I follow my endlessly frustrating football club, Arsenal. In the summer I enjoy playing cricket and so am hoping to find a new team in the area to continue this. I’m also a fan of pub quizzing, particularly for the former bit!

What is your favourite place you've been and why? Dubrovnik, Croatia & Everything about it!

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? Time travel and all sorts!

What is the #1 item on your bucket list? Successfully getting through my first few weeks at the UKAEA!

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme: Meeting people who care about the planet and also like technology

What do you like to do in your spare time? Reading Science Fiction, playing piano, overanalysing films

What is your favourite place you've been and why? Iceland – we stayed overnight in a single house surrounded only by mountains, and I’d never stayed anywhere so quiet.

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it? I would pick the power to stop arguments by making people temporarily telepathic so they understand one another’s points of view (and then turn it off before that starts another argument)

Who inspires you? My friends, who often manage to surprise me in a good way

What is the #1 item on your bucket list? I think it would be quite cool to one day visit an offshore wind farm, though I might change my mind if it gets very cold and wet.

What are you looking forward to on the Grad Scheme:  Finally putting my degree to good use and helping to solve some real problems 

What do you like to do in your spare time?  I like to play guitar and the drums, go on adventures with people, go surfing when it’s not too cold, drink alcohol 

What is your favourite place you've been and why? Edinburgh, my home city 

If you could have any superpower, what would you pick and what would you do with it?  The ability to fly so I can frighten pilots and people who clean skyscrapers

What is the #1 item on your bucket list? Travel to every continent and as many countries as I can manage
